Jonathan J. Fleming

Oxford Bioscience Partners Managing Partner, Chairman of the Board

Mr. Fleming has been in the investment business for over twenty years, starting and financing growth companies in the United States, Europe and Israel. Prior to joining OBP in 1996, he was a Founding General Partner of MVP Ventures in Boston, MA. He began his investment career with TVM Techno Venture Management in Munich, Germany. Mr. Fleming has also co-founded Medica Venture Partners, a venture capital investment firm specializing in early stage healthcare and biotechnology companies in Israel. Mr. Fleming holds a Master's degree in Public Administration from Princeton University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

Mr. Fleming is a co-founder and board member of Memory Pharmaceuticals. He is also Chairman of the Board of BioProcessors Corporation and is a director of several private companies including Leerink Swann, a Boston based investment bank specializing in healthcare companies. Mr. Fleming is a Trustee of the Museum of Science in Boston.

 

John W. Littlechild

Healthcare Ventures, Director

Mr. Littlechild has extensive experience in the venture capital industry. Before joining HCV, he was involved in establishing Advent Venture Capital Company in the U.K. and was a founder of Advent International Corporation in Boston in 1984. In the nine years he was with the Advent Group, he was involved in many international venture deals. In addition to his international activities, Mr. Littlechild established and managed the U.S. health care investment activities of Advent International which involved investing in early stage biopharmaceutical companies including Genzyme, where he was a member of the Board. Prior to his involvement in the Advent Group, he worked with Citicorp Venture Capital in London and worked in marketing and financial management with Rank Xerox and ICI.

Mr. Littlechild serves on the boards for the Harvard Medical School, including the Executive Committee of the Board of Fellows, the Science & Technology Committee and is Chairman of the Microbiology Department Advisory Board. He is also a member of the Board of Visitors of the Beth Israel Deaconess Center for Research and Education.

Mr. Littlechild holds a B.Sc. (1st Class Honors) from the University of Manchester and a M.B.A. from Manchester Business School.

 

Russell T. Ray

HLM Venture Partners, Managing Partner

Mr. Ray is a Managing Partner of HLM Venture Partners. Prior to joining HLM in 2003, Mr. Ray was a Managing Director and Global Co-Head of Health Care Investment Banking at Credit Suisse First Boston where he focused on providing strategic and financial advice to life sciences, health care services and medical device companies. Prior to joining Credit Suisse First Boston in 1999, Mr. Ray spent twelve years at Deutsche Bank Alex. Brown as a Managing Director and Global Head of Health Care Investment Banking. He began his career in investment banking in 1982 as a member of the High Technology and Emerging Growth Group at Merrill Lynch. During his investment banking career, Mr. Ray successfully completed over 175 merger and financing transactions for leading health care companies in the United States, Europe and Israel. He is a director of Allergan (NYSE) and the Friends School of Baltimore. He received a B.S. degree from the United States Military Academy, a B.S. degree in Zoology and Ecology from the University of Washington, an M.S. degree in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania and an M.B.A. degree in Finance from the Wharton School.

 

Prof. Charles A. Cooney

Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Prof. Charles L. Cooney is Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, in the Department of Chemical Engineering at MIT. He is also the faculty director of the Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation, Co-Director of the Program on the Pharmaceutical Industry (POPI) and MIT faculty director of the Consortium on Advanced Manufacturing for Pharmaceuticals (CAMP). Prof. Cooney obtained his Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and his Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Biochemical Engineering from MIT. His research interests span a range of topics in Biochemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Manufacturing. He has published over 300 research papers and co-authored or edited 3 books. Prof. Cooney serves as a consultant to a number of biotech and pharmaceutical companies, and sits on the Boards of Directors of Genzyme, Cuno and Biocon, Ltd (India) as well as BioProcessors. He is a member of the FDA Advisory Committee for Pharmaceutical Science.

 

John F. Dee

President and Chief Executive Officer (former), Hypnion

Mr. Dee served as President and Chief Executive Officer, and director at Hypnion from July 2000 through its $315 million acquisition by Eli Lilly and Company in April 2007. Prior to his appointment as CEO of Hypnion, he served as the CEO for Genta during a "turnaround" period- Genta's market capitalization has increased from $5 million to more than $500 million in four years. For several years, Mr. Dee conducted performance improvement and strategic growth initiatives for major corporations as a senior consultant at McKinsey & Co., Inc., an international management consulting firm. In other pursuits, Mr. Dee led a group of San Francisco Bay Area economists and business leaders in a diagnostic and public policy review of the San Francisco Bay Area's economic performance in 1996. He also advised the Pacific Presidio Center, a non-profit environmental group, on the potential redesign of the Presidio army base into a world environmental center in 1993. Mr. Dee holds an M.S. in Engineering from Stanford University and an M.B.A from Harvard University.

 

Stephen P. DeFalco

President and Chief Executive Officer, MDS Inc.

Mr. DeFalco is the President and Chief Executive Officer of MDS Inc., and a member of the MDS Board of Directors. Stephen joined MDS from U.S. Genomics where he was Chairman and CEO. Prior to his role at U.S. Genomics, he served as President of PerkinElmer Instruments and Senior Vice President of PerkinElmer Inc. Stephen has held senior management positions at United Technologies and McKinsey & Company in their high tech sector. Mr. DeFalco holds an M.S. in Management from the Sloan School of Management at MIT, where he won the award for the most outstanding thesis in Marketing and the Alexander Proudfoot Award for academic excellence. Mr. DeFalco also holds an M.S. in Computer Engineering from Syracuse University and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT.

 

Andrey J. Zarur, Ph.D.

Founder

Dr. Zarur is a seasoned entrepreneur with over 10 years of international industrial and academic experience. He has participated in the start-up process of several biotechnology and engineering companies, both as operational executive and as member of the Board of Directors.

Prior to founding BioProcessors, Dr. Zarur served as Chief Operating Officer of Starlab N/V, a European fundamental research company. Besides his role as COO, he also managed the Life Sciences Division of Starlab with an emphasis on functional genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics. Under his management, the company grew to over 100 employees and secured research contracts with leading international companies, including Nokia, Sony, Philips and Procter & Gamble. Previously, he co-founded two ventures in Latin America, GDI and Star Engineering, providing consulting and engineering services to the pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries, respectively. As Chairman and CEO of GDI, he built an organization with sales presence in 5 countries and over 60 employees providing engineering services to fine chemical, pharmaceutical manufacturing and diagnostics companies. Previously he was the R&D Brand Manager for Health-Care products at Procter & Gamble Latin America.

Dr. Zarur earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and Master's degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has authored several refereed papers published in leading scientific journals, including Nature and Langmuir. He is the author of over 70 issued and pending patents, and has been the recipient of various prestigious scientific and management awards.

Dr. Zarur serves on the scientific advisory board of various life sciences companies. He also serves on the Board of Infantia, a non-profit foundation dedicated to providing education, support and health services to underprivileged children in developing nations, and is a Sponsor of UNICEF.
